Every subject you try to take a picture of will present it’s own unique set of challenges to overcome. That’s especially true if you’re trying to photograph smoke.
In this video, professional photographer Gavin Hoey is going to introduce you to a unique photographic tutorial on how to shoot smoke in a small table top studio.
The source of smoke can be anything but the easiest and most effective would be an incense stick. They’re long and seem to take forever to burn. Just be sure to get one that has a smell you like.
The set up is fairly simple.
You have a table to set your incense on and a black background in behind it. On the table just to the left of the incense stick is an ordinary articulating desk lamp to shine on the smoke.
To the right of the incense stick you would place your flash which is triggered by your camera.
Now if you’re wondering, “Why the table lamp?” it’s used to light the smoke so your camera can focus on it. You’ll see Gavin demonstrate how effective it is once he turns the lamp off and the smoke seems to disappear.
Gavin also points out a number of other great tips on photographing smoke but you’ll have to watch the video to find out what exactly they are.
Once you see how it’s done – be sure to give it a try and see what kind of results you come up with
